Philosophy

HawksView Gardens positions itself within the context of the natural world and believes that  authentic learning can and should happen outdoors.  Everything we do orbits the fundamental belief that our relationship with nature is one of the most important of our lives.

HVG believes that children innately know best what skills they are ready to explore.  Therefore, teachers are facilitators of learning, not givers of knowledge.  The educator is first and foremost, an observer and a researcher of children.

Another main objective of a teacher is relationship development, both with the child and with their family.  It is through authentic relationship that trust is formed.  Trust allows children and adults to work through problems and explore new topics safely.

The teacher expects great things from their students, always finding ways to challenge them to learn and grow.

Our program is inherently child-led.  We are dedicated to allowing ample time for exploring  a child’s inspiration.  A child will never be rushed to complete a task.  Our daily schedule is flexible to allow for spontaneous experiences and learning.

We believe that play is a child’s work.  It is the most effective way for them to learn and hone new skills. Therefore, the educator needs to take a play-responsive approach when facilitating activities. The majority of our day will be spent in play, whether it be child-initiated or teacher-supported.

At HVG, the child is the leader of their own learning.  They are shown the same level of respect as the teacher and held accountable for themselves and their behaviors.  At HVG each child is supported in developing greater self-reliance and understanding their role in co-creating an enriching and cohesive environment.  Every child is seen as having innate value and what they have to offer helps in the education of all.  We are all unique, with varying degrees of abilities and strengths.  Children at HVG are welcomed and accepted for who they are.

*Understanding the community context of whom one serves is the crucial foundation to any educational program.  Great care and intentionality is needed to develop an environment, curriculum, and assessment procedure that leverages a community’s strengths and values.
