There is a difference between a risk and a hazard!
Regular experiences in nature typically involve traversing diverse and ever-changing landscapes and thus may encourage children to engage in a large variety of physical challenges that develop a greater sense of balance and coordination.
Natural landscapes also encourage risk assessment skills which, in the long term, help children make brave, safe choices. We as a society have become more risk-adverse, however, risk taking is a valuable and necessary aspect to a child’s growth and development. Feeling comfortable with taking risks in all aspects of life, whether physical, social, or emotional, promotes resilience and openness to new circumstances and situations.
At HawksView Gardens, we responsibly support children in their explorations of the world, their bodies, and their minds. We conduct daily risk/benefit assessments of all indoor and outdoor areas and include the children in the process of assessment. Please ask about our assessment tools and how we determine the benefits of risk in the outdoors!
