In order to fully understand the immense benefits of a nature-based program (NBP), we need to define what one is and all that it may encompass. Programs that have children consistently outdoors between 30% – 100% of the time are considered to be in the nature-based program designation. However, just being outside is not enough. These programs have very specific, intentional curricula and methodologies that are anchored in experiential learning where the natural world is seen as both the classroom environment and the subject of learning. A nature preschool’s program is based on high-quality, developmentally appropriate practices as well as environmental education, requiring staff to be well versed in both. An NBP uses the natural world to support holistic development goals within all domains: cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual as well as the development of an ecological identity and environmental ethic.
